Tricks to Sewing Decorative Elastic

Decorative elastic has many uses for the home sewer. Lingerie elastic is good to use for anything that your skin will come in contact with because it is softer and not scratchy. Elasticized lace is great for applique work for sleepwear or household linens. A basic sewing machine is all you need to sew decorative elastic.

Decorative Elastic Finish
An easy way to finish knit tops is to use decorative lingerie Wholesale elastic. Use seam allowances that are equal to the width of your elastic. Start at one shoulder seam. Sew the decorative elastic to the edge of the fabric's right side. Do not stretch the elastic as you sew. Turn the elastic to the inside and cover stitch. Repeat for the other shoulder seam, neckline and hemline.

Zigzag Stitch
Use a zigzag stitch when you sew decorative elastics onto underwear. Also use this stitch when you sew decorative elasticized lace. The zigzag stitch enforces the stitching around seams and ensures that the elasticized lace does not rip apart at the sewn area.

Stretch Stitch
Stretch stitch is used for sewing straight lines on any type of elastic. You can use this stitch when you don't want your stitches visible. Use elasticized thread when using stretch stitch. For better results, match the thread as closely to the fabric's color as possible.

Overlap Method
When applying elasticized decorative lace applique, you can use the overlap method. Place the decorative lace on the area to be appliqued. Place it directly onto the fabric; there is no need to cut first. Tape the applique down with lingerie tape. Sew down the applique using the zigzag method; you can sew through the tape. Remove the tape and cut away the underside where the fabric is exposed.
